PFAS limits for food-contact packaging
From 12 August 2026, Article 5 sets concentration limits for PFAS in any packaging that touches food or drink directly. This is a concentration limit, not a ban on PFAS by name, so it can catch a coating or liner you never chose for its PFAS content. There is no transitional period: it applies to packaging already on the market, not just new stock.
- Any single non-polymeric PFAS substance: 25 ppb or below
- Sum of non-polymeric PFAS substances: 250 ppb or below
- Total fluorine, including polymeric PFAS: 50 ppm or below
Only the layer or component that actually touches food is held to this limit. An outer box that never contacts food isn't covered, even inside the same packaging system.
